Forum signatures: a good way to advertise?

Making use of forum signatures is one of best ways to promote your forum across multiple forums without having to pay for the promotion. I find it very useful and it's why I use it all the time.

Forum signatures crowded with links, banners and all kinds of things linking to external pages seem to be very popular now. If you're active on a forum that has a lot of members and add a link to your site in your signature, chances are you will get a few new visitors. As long as it's not forbidden by the site's rules (some admins do not want members placing external links on their sigs), it is a very easy way to get people clicking on your site's link. The more you post, the more hits you'll get!

Have you ever linked to your site through a signature in a site you're active on? Have you ever paid someone else to do it for you (by "renting" his signature space)? Or perhaps rented your own signature?

Forum signature is a good way advertise anything on forums. I've been using it to promote my forum on other forums. It helps me to get new members.

If you’re the type of person that is usually active on forums and contributing to the discussions there, then you can make use of that opportunity to advertise on your signature. It works well, especially if the forum has a lot of members and visitors.

They can be, but it depends. A well-designed, non-spammy signature with a clear link can grab attention over time, especially on active forums. But if it’s too flashy or frequent, it can annoy people and hurt your reputation.
