How do you rank your articles without paying for SEO tools?

Free tools are available, but they are not as effective as the paid ones. I try to get backlinks from other forums and websites, it works a little but not much.

Well I am agree with you, @Kennysplash there are some tools like Google Search Console, Google Analytics, Moz Free Tools and Google Trends available on free having limited access of some services, but for advance research and analysis you have to go with paid one.
Initially I don't use paid tools for my article review, but over time you have to use it for detailed analysis. I use these seo tools which are Ahrefs, GSC and Semrush for checking performance of my articles and website. I worked all these three but Ahrefs is my favorite.
I also came across this post where author listed few SEO tools, where he write about "How to choose the right SEO tools for you" which will really helps you here.
Apart from this I also want to add some line for you - SEO tools help you a lot, but ranking is more about consistency (Do off page SEO), intent, and value than budget.
