Would you place a flashy animated banner on top of your forum to get money even though it would piss your users off? Would you use Ad.Fly or other similar programs to get money for every click a link gets even though your users would be even more pissed off? Why or why not would you do it?

I try to avoid putting ads on every inch of my website. I try to keep the limit to 2 per page and no more than that. I've seen sites that have had up to 8 and I think it's sort of tachy.

I have a simple rule about ads. If it's something I hate to see when I visit other sites, then I won't put it on mine. For starters, I won't use Adf.ly or any other system like that. It's very annoying. Also I won't use flash because I hate slow loading pages. Another offender are ads that pop-up as an overlay and covers the whole page.

I think I would have to draw the line at the ad.fly. I have issues with all websites that use ad.fly. I tend not to frequent them. I just think it is rather annoying to be directed to an advertisement before I reach my intended destination.
I think I would place at least one banner on my website. I do not become annoyed by visiting websites with a banner or two on them. I have an option of whether, or not to click on the advertisement. If I do click the advertisement, I will then be requesting to be redirected.

I only put 2 banner ads on most of my sites, a 468 x 60 and 250 x 250.
I tried adfly before when I had decent visits to some of my sites but instead of getting more income, I lost about half of those decent visits.

About coinurl, I use it on my bitcoin related site. I placed 2 coinurl banner ads and their shortened url for links directing to other sites.

I would never put huge, annoying banner ads. Another thing that I wouldn't do is try ANY sort of sneaky tactics. Trying to make ads look like they are a part of your website, linking to sites that are obvious scams, etc. are big no-nos to me.

No pop ups or pop unders, or full page ads where you land on the site, and are taken somewhere else. I won't put up tacky banners either. Your banner has to be good looking or don't bother contacting me.

This post sums it up quite well. It is a Jesus thing. Don't do to others what you would not like done to you. Extrapolate to banners and websites. What annoys you? What does not? Sure we are all different, but common sense is something we usually share.

I'd do a flashy animated ad if it was relevant to the forum topic... certainly not any generic download or "one weird trick" ad. I also wouldn't do porn ads or any kind of popup.

I refuse to use ads that could possibly trigger epilepsy. Anything that has a lot of flashing, I refuse to use, given that I have a friend with sensitive epilepsy that is easily triggered by those kinds of things. If there are more ads than space on a website, too, I won't use them.

I do not think you should even be considering revenue/monetization until your site has a decent amount of sustainable traffic, at least a few thousand hits per month minimum.

I definitely wouldn't do it, not if it was flashy and animated. Discrete is fine though, i know you wouldn't get as many clicks, but i'd rather that and not annoy people.

I agree with every single point of your post with just a difference. I dislike Adf.ly links but I won't mind clicking on some of those links if I'm getting something good in return. I have seen people using those links to promote file download. If the file that I'll be downloading is something worth of seeing an ad I won't mind. I haven't used those kind of URL shorteners myself (ok, I have but I don't any more) but I think there might be times when they are ok.

Hello All,

I get turned off by sites that have too many ads running at one time. It is very confusing if they are not placed correctly on the page. Also those links may have viruses or issues may be going on behind the scenes. Also we understand the individuals may need ads to pay for the hosting site or other items, but limit them to two per page or less. This will improve your users experience.

I didn't realize that....

CrazyCroc,

You are right. There is no reason for a company to pay to have advertising on a website that has no real traffic. How are both companies gaining? They are not in reality. It is critical that everyone be open and honest about the situation because a business deal can quickly go down. The key is for businesses to meet each others needs so that true success can be had.

Everyone needs to do their homework and make sure it is the best opportunity for those involved.

Well, you are right to an extent in the sense that it is not always easy for the visitors to the site to do better in getting through the site with all the ads that are on it.

Blackhat SEO is the last thing I'm going to use for the purpose of growing my website to ran higher on Google to boost my ranking which will directly impact on my earnings on my website. It's so wrong and it comes with a grave consequences when Google catches your website.

Making money is a very good thing as a website or not because you have been invested in your website and in turn deserve to make money as well from your website. This is why does a website owner I will always make use of ads the way that it's going to benefit me.

I have never Considered taking a loan though it not a very bad way to generate revenue for you business but I just don't fancy but and would implore other means instead.

Having to use excessive ads that open on any click on my website is something that I would never be interested in doing to generate revenue from my website. It's something that's capable of chasing all your members away.
