Some players can already play a new MMORPG called Palia, which ditches the frantic combat loop of most games of its kind to focus on a more carefree, comfortable experience. Palia was inspired by games like Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley, but on a larger scale, as it offers a large world to explore, similar to recent Zelda entries such as Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom. Players can prepare enough ACNH Bells in the game.
Palia was originally announced in 2021 by Los Angeles-based developer Singularity 6, which counts veterans from companies like Riot Games and Blizzard on staff. According to the developer, Palia's goal is to offer an open world filled with activities such as crafting, farming, and resource gathering, while players will interact with a group of interesting villagers and their real-life friends. At the time of the initial announcement, popular streamer Asmongold spoke about Palia, saying the game looked like it could bring some fresh ideas to the genre, but there's certainly a lack of adventurous combat that might put some players off.
Now, Palia's closed beta has begun. Currently, only players who have previously applied for a test on the official website and received an invitation by email can enter the magical world of Palia. However, the public beta phase will begin on August 10th, when everyone can join.
Palia's game loop places a strong emphasis on social aspects and crafting, as players will continually acquire resources through gathering, hunting, or harvesting to build further tools or objects, such as houses. The game will also feature Zelda-like mechanics, such as the ability to climb mountains and cliffs, or use a glider to explore the world from a height, which could give the game a more vertical feel.
While Palia has attracted more than 600,000 players in its closed beta so far, it remains to be seen if it will continue to be successful over time, as it will certainly face stiff competition. For example, Genshin Impact developer HoYoverse may be working on a sim with a strong Animal Crossing vibe, according to recent leaks. Between this leaked project and other MMOs and games inspired by Animal Crossing or Stardew Valley, it's fair to say that Palia needs to be pretty good to stand out.
